Speculative Fiction Blog: When I was young

When I was a child speculative fiction taught me to dream with my eyes open and to let go of my life, if only for twenty minutes at a time. To lose myself in the pages of a comic book, were welcome breaks from the “real world”. But in reading the comics like the Justice League or Actions Comics,…

The Prisoners

Imprisoned by the fear of pain

    you sit in distain

Never to venture out

    bound tightly by doubt

Holding tightly your tea and keys

you read of a distant sea

Hoping to find a line

    to set free your mind.

In Our Anger

I was a teenager during the height of the “missing and murdered children case” here in Atlanta. I remember one frantic evening when my younger brother was late getting home from a school event. I remember my mother breaking down into tears as we searched. We found him safe and sound, but you never forget the times you see your mother cry. Those moments are seared into your soul. Then, how much worse is it for the Trayvon Martin’s mother?

But what if?

What if there was no audio…

Buried Prayers

I've been burying my prayers

holding them down

beneath the ground

I've been burying my prayers

do they make a sound

will they be found

I've been burying my prayers

under a red clay mound

my love is bound

I've been burying my prayers

where hearts no longer pound

and hopes drown

Heavenly Places

Our heavenly places transcend

time and space

life and death

flesh and spirit

Where are our heavenly places?

in the beginning of a new day

in the midst of confession

in the end of a journey home

Where are our heavenly places?

in submission to God

in the breath of our prayers

in the silence of our fears

Where are our heavenly places?

in the love of our children

in the…

That Train

I'm on that train, that train that has nowhere to go, but always has a destination.

I never know where I'm going, but I always know when I get there.

Yeah, that train.... disassociating so that I can associate, letting go, so that I can take hold.

Hold Me Down

Hold me down,

Hold me down,

when I'm not around.

When I'm caught up and bound, hold me down.

When I'm without a crown, hold me down.

Hold me down when love cannot be found.

Hold me down,

Hold me down,

when I'm unwound.

When I'm painted up like a clown, hold me down.

When I'm far from sacred ground, hold me down.

Hold me down when my screams do not make a sound.

Hold me…

Time Lost

Time Lost in and out of love

Time lost trying to heal those who don’t want to be healed

Time lost chasing someone else’s dream

Time lost being selfish

Time lost  waiting for some big moment

Time lost being afraid

Time lost keeping score

Time lost away from the beach

Time lost counting time

My Prayers

I can’t say the same prayers as you anymore. My prayers have evolved. I’ve had to let go of so much of what you told me. I tried to hold on, but your prayers were often sand between my fingers. I need prayers that fit my own soul, that lead me down my own path, for better or worse, it is and shall be.

From my new ebook: A Woman's Field Guide to Men

The Hustler:

-         General Characteristics – He comes at you with plenty of swag. The kind of swag you only get from walking outside of the lines. Lots of guys who’ve been in prison, change their ways when they get out, but we’re not talking about those guys. We’re referring here to guys still in the game. I know the suits on Madison Avenue have you convinced that the Hustler is what you want in a man, but really? No, I mean really? (By the way, Tupac attended Julliard…

From my new ebook: A Women's Field Guide to Men

Free Agent:

-         General Characteristics – He keeps it light and honest.  If you connect, you connect. No big deal. He doesn’t care who you date when he’s not around. In fact, he’s so secure; he “might” even hook you up with one of his more marriage minded friends, if you tire of him.  But he’s not planning to ever marry. The whole concept is foreign to him. On the other hand, he’ll “date” all kinds of women. Big, Tall, Short, Small, he loves them all. He doesn’t…

From my new ebook: A Man's Field Guide to Women

Exchange Student:

-         General Characteristics – Fine, sexy, smart and looking for a sponsor, a fact which they will let you know up front. They don’t’ care if you’re married, involved or single, as long as you pay their bills. Societal norms seem outdated to them. Their perspective is similar to the Free Agent (see field guide to men). She’s all about keeping things drama free and fun. She’s doesn’t want to marry you and she won’t ask you for anything. Being with her…

From my new ebook: A Man's Field Guide to Women: Goddess

Goddess:

-         General Characteristics – Gorgeous and smart, they don’t need a man to support them. However, their mates are typically men who are very good at what they do, be it a doctor, a math teacher or whatever. They appreciate and can readily identify excellence in others.

-         Found in – Could be anywhere, but you know within five minutes of meeting one, that they are indeed the real thing.

-         Relations after Marriage – They know it takes work…

I can do nothing...

Sometimes in life the hardest thing to do, is to do nothing... meaning, that life has taught me that you can't fix everything or everybody. Don't like it, but it's not meant for me to like, for I am evolving too.

Everything Considered: Post Racial

The walls are coming down.

The spat between Reverend Sharpton and Dr. Cornel West, while disappointing may be

indicative of a bigger change taking place. Most of us question if we are

really in a post-racial America simply because we now have an African-American

president. If only that were so, I would certainly welcome it.  However, I don’t think we can dismiss changes

taking place around us and within us.

The public airing of laundry between the good rev and…

Time

Time is an illusion,

created by the Infinite,

so that we the finite,

might have relevance.

There was no was,

anymore than there is a then.

We have only the now,

Everything Considered - The Dating Game - Part 2

Do you know people who are never happy? They complain about everything, even to the point that if they won the lottery, they’d cry about paying the taxes. So, what does this have to do with dating? Well, some people behave this way in their relationships too. Nothing is ever good enough, and they are always looking for the exit.  I call it Relational A.D.D.

The truth of the matter is that some folks are just in love with being in love.  And even more unfortunate, is that this phrase…

Everything Considered: The Dating Game - Part 1

Here is the ugly truth of the matter; most of what you read about finding a mate is largely crap that some writer slung against the wall, hoping something sticks.  And while many of their suggestions are helpful, they often ignore the elephant in the room.  Equating finding a mate to balancing a budget, these actions are like deciding you're going to cut Starbucks out of your diet.  Sure, that will save you at least $60 a month and taking your lunch could save you another $120 to $150 a…
